A group of 12 Road Share campaign supporters took to the streets of Glasgow today to celebrate cycling in the city - just minutes after the start of the Glasgow 2014 men’s Time Trial racing.

Members of the campaign, which supports calls for presumed liability laws, spent their lunch break on Thursday 31st July riding around the city’s George Square on the newly launched Nextbike cycles.

The event was organised in a bid to celebrate the initiative which encourages people to take up the sport and increase cyclist numbers in Scotland’s largest city.

Road Share member Rod Mitchell said:

“Whilst as a group we are campaigning to help improve road user’s safety by introducing presumed liability to Scottish civil law, we are also a group of people who are fanatically keen on cycling in general.

“Today’s activity was a great opportunity to join in with the amazing sporting spirit that’s taken over Glasgow at the moment and to show support for an initiative that will hopefully continue to encourage more people to take to two wheels.

“Cycling is a great way to travel and Road Share is keen to share its passion with as many people as possible.”

The Road Share campaign for presumed liability is working to introduce a hierarchy of responsibility whereby motor vehicle drivers would be presumed liable for any loss, injury and damage caused to a cyclist involved in a collision. Also, a cyclist would be presumed liable for loss, injury and damage caused to a pedestrian in any collision with a cycle thus ensuring the vulnerable are afforded more protection in Civil Law. The presumption of liability would still allow a driver or cyclist to allege fault or part-fault on the part of the injured cyclist or pedestrian.

Currently over 6,000 people have signed the campaign's online petition and there’s a growing range of MSP's and public figures who all recognise the need for change in the culture amongst Scotland’s road users.

As the proposals only relate to Civil Law, they would have no effect over the fundamental principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ under Scots Criminal Law
